HKBU Scholar Invented Smartphone based Detection System to Alert Drowsy Drivers

Fatigue Driving Detection and Alarm System was invented by Professor Cheung Yiu-ming, which uses a smartphone to capture real-time video of the driver, as well as detection and tracking technologies to analyse his facial expression and head pose. An alarm is automatically set off to alert the driver when symptoms of drowsiness are observed. The invention won a gold medal with distinction in the computer science category, as well as the Swiss Automobile Club Prize at the 45th International Exhibition of Inventions, Geneva.
