Dr Simon Han Quan-bin, Associate Professor of School of Chinese Medicine and his team invented a convenient and low-cost method to efficiently authenticate the valuable Chinese herbal medicine such as dendrobium officinale and cordyceps. The authentication method enables qualitative and quantitative analysis suitable for commercial use, particularly for Chinese medicines proprietors.
The team won a silver medal by the Seventh Bank of China (HK) Hong Kong Federation of Innovative Technologies and Manufacturing Industries (FITMI) in 2017. In 2018, the team also a gold medal at the 1st Asia Exhibition of Inventions Hong Kong held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC). HKBU is the only institution in Hong Kong that has been awarded a gold medal at the exhibition. Furthermore, Dr Han's patented invention has won the Excellence Award (the third prize) in the 2nd Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) High Value Patent Portfolio Contest 2020. The contest aims to promote the collaboration on technological innovation and entrepreneurship between the Mainland, Hong Kong, and Macao, and attracted over 600 participants from a wide variety of companies and enterprises this year. The invention stood out from 38 award-winning projects from Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao, and became one of the three winners from Hong Kong.
