The HKBU KT Awards 2022, comprising Knowledge Transfer Award and Innovation Award, were conferred at the Awards Presentation for Outstanding Performance held on 24 May 2022.

Two research projects conducted by HKBU research teams clinched Silver Medals at the Geneva International Exhibition of Inventions 2022.

HKBU is the only Hong Kong institution winning the Times Higher Education (THE) Awards Asia 2021. “Space to Breathe”, a transdisciplinary research and knowledge transfer project which has attracted great praise from audiences and reviewers alike, won the Award in the Excellence and Innovation in the Arts category.

HKBU INPSIRE is a brand new youtube platform managed by Knowledge Transfer Office (KTO), to showcase HKBU’s innovation offers, KT impact, research excellence and commercialisation achievements. Over 80 high quality videos have been uploaded to this platform covering 5 main themes – Innovation, Society, Partnership, Research and Entrepreneurship.

The fruits of four research projects conducted by Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) research teams shone at the 2021 Geneva International Exhibition of Inventions, scoring four prizes including a Gold Medal with the Congratulations of Jury, two Gold Medals and a Silver Medal.

Prostate cancer is the third most common cancers in men in Hong Kong. While medical statistics have reported that one in six men will develop prostate cancer during their lifetimes, which is the fifth most fatal cancer. The disease is curable with minimal side effects if detected early. The “non-invasive, urine-based prostate cancer detection kit”, developed by Prof Gary Wong Ka-leung from the Department of Chemistry of HKBU, is a simple and accurate, urine-based prostate cancer detection kit which innovative test can detect the biomarker affected by cancer cells with an accuracy of up to 90%. It can be easily used at home as users simply need to mix a urine sample with the chemical agent.

Prof Bian Zhaoxiang and his research team from the School of Chinese Medicine collaborated with the Faculty of Medicine of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) to conduct a research on the feasibility of treating IBS with traditional Chinese herbal medicine. The research group demonstrated that the invented composition of Chinese medicine is effective in curing visceral pain, torso pain and diarrhoea.

Dr Simon Han Quan-bin, Associate Professor of School of Chinese Medicine and his team invented a convenient and low-cost method to efficiently authenticate the valuable Chinese herbal medicine such as dendrobium officinale and cordyceps. The authentication method enables qualitative and quantitative analysis suitable for commercial use, particularly for Chinese medicines proprietors.

A primary cilium marker that detects Joubert syndrome and an emerging class of genetic disorders called ciliopathy. The reagent invented by Prof Gary Wong can provide test results in mere six hours and at a fraction of the cost of current technologies.

Portable Balance Scale was invented by Professor Jeffrey Cheung, which measures people's balance index to reduce their risks of falling over. By analysing the body's moving amplitude when it tries to maintain balance on an unstable platform, the specific index value can then be measured.
