The fruits of four research projects conducted by Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) research teams shone at the 2021 Geneva International Exhibition of Inventions, scoring four prizes including a Gold Medal with the Congratulations of Jury, two Gold Medals and a Silver Medal.

HKBU Scholar Invented Award-winning Urine-based Prostate Cancer Detection Kit

Prostate cancer is the third most common cancers in men in Hong Kong. While medical statistics have reported that one in six men will develop prostate cancer during their lifetimes, which is the fifth most fatal cancer. The disease is curable with minimal side effects if detected early. The “non-invasive, urine-based prostate cancer detection kit”, developed by Prof Gary Wong Ka-leung from the Department of Chemistry of HKBU, is a simple and accurate, urine-based prostate cancer detection kit which innovative test can detect the biomarker affected by cancer cells with an accuracy of up to 90%. It can be easily used at home as users simply need to mix a urine sample with the chemical agent.

HKBU and CUHK Award-winning Chinese Medicine Collaboration for IBS

Prof Bian Zhaoxiang and his research team from the School of Chinese Medicine collaborated with the Faculty of Medicine of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) to conduct a research on the feasibility of treating IBS with traditional Chinese herbal medicine. The research group demonstrated that the invented composition of Chinese medicine is effective in curing visceral pain, torso pain and diarrhoea.

Dr Simon Han Quan-bin, Associate Professor of School of Chinese Medicine and his team invented a convenient and low-cost method to efficiently authenticate the valuable Chinese herbal medicine such as dendrobium officinale and cordyceps. The authentication method enables qualitative and quantitative analysis suitable for commercial use, particularly for Chinese medicines proprietors.

Portable Balance Scale was invented by Professor Jeffrey Cheung, which measures people's balance index to reduce their risks of falling over. By analysing the body's moving amplitude when it tries to maintain balance on an unstable platform, the specific index value can then be measured.
