HKBU Scholar Invented Award-winning Urine-based Prostate Cancer Detection Kit

Prostate cancer is the third most common cancers in men in Hong Kong. While medical statistics have reported that one in six men will develop prostate cancer during their lifetimes, which is the fifth most fatal cancer. The disease is curable with minimal side effects if detected early. The “non-invasive, urine-based prostate cancer detection kit”, developed by Prof Gary Wong Ka-leung from the Department of Chemistry of HKBU, is a simple and accurate, urine-based prostate cancer detection kit which innovative test can detect the biomarker affected by cancer cells with an accuracy of up to 90%. It can be easily used at home as users simply need to mix a urine sample with the chemical agent.

Prof Bian Zhaoxiang and his research team from the School of Chinese Medicine collaborated with the Faculty of Medicine of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) to conduct a research on the feasibility of treating IBS with traditional Chinese herbal medicine. The research group demonstrated that the invented composition of Chinese medicine is effective in curing visceral pain, torso pain and diarrhoea.

The authentication method enables qualitative and quantitative analysis suitable for commercial use, particularly for Chinese medicines proprietors.

HKBU Scholar Invented Smartphone based Detection System to Alert Drowsy Drivers

Fatigue Driving Detection and Alarm System was invented by Professor Cheung Yiu-ming, which uses a smartphone to capture real-time video of the driver, as well as detection and tracking technologies to analyse his facial expression and head pose. An alarm is automatically set off to alert the driver when symptoms of drowsiness are observed.
