Dr Daphne Mah is an expert in the social aspects of governance for smart energy transitions in Asia. She received her PhD degree from the Kadoorie Institute at The University of Hong Kong. She is currently the Director of the Asian Energy Studies Centre, and an Associate Professor at the Department of Geography of Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU).


Dr Mah and her team have been highly active in research with 18 ongoing or recently completed projects funded by the Hong Kong government, and several contract studies funded by NGOs or utilities. Partnering with Greenpeace, World Wide Fund for Nature, CLP Power Hong Kong, Dr Mah’s and her team is highly active in aligning spanning actors for effective public engagement.


From empowering communities, engaging stakeholders, identifying high-impact intervention points, evaluating feasibility through pilot research results, to delivering strategies for designing policy frameworks for smart and efficient energy transformation, Dr Mah provides expert input and recommendations for informed policymaking from a governance and social policy perspective.

 

Dr Mah's major research topics and works involve: 

  • Exploring the Role of Big Data Analytics in Promoting Smart Low-carbon Cities: A Human Centered, Community-based, and Deep Engagement Approach in Hong Kong (funded by RGC's Research Impact Fund; HK$3.9 million; 2021-2024)
  • Deliberative Participation, Trust, and Social Learning for Sustainable Energy Transitions (SETs): A Comparative Study of Japan, South Korea, and China (funded by RGC's General Research Fund; HK$1,326,170; 2017-2021) 
  • Exploring a Community-based Solution for Enhancing Hong Kong’s Climate Resilience: A Pilot Study of a Climate Resilient Community in Sai Kung (funded by Greenpeace; 2020-2022)
  • Trust and the Smart City (funded by HKBU's Faculty Niche Research Fund; 2020-2022)
  • The Role and Missions of Hong Kong under Energy Transition of the Greater Bay Area (funded by the Chinese Academy of Engineering; 2020-2021)
  • Provision of Services for Facilitating and Deploying the Solar Harvest for Educational Activities (commissioned by Electrical Mechanical & Services Department, HKSAR government; 2019-2021)
